Throughout my time playing Football Manager, I’ve pretty much used to same idea when designing tactics – to try and recreate real world tactical philosophies. I’m not alone in this way of thinking, as I’m sure many of the other FM tacticians think along the same lines, but I needed something new, a new way of looking at the game, and so the FM Grid System was born.8 E8 ]" ]+ c2 z& v4 Y" V2 R) s
7 d9 m( r/ Q+ P, e6 vRecreating real life tactics is quite simple really. You analyse player positions, adjust the defensive line to reflect a ‘stand off’ approach or ‘intense pressing’ philosophy, and tweak individual sliders all day long in the hope of seeing your players performances mirror their real world counterparts. My grid system approach works differently. It’s an entirely new way of constructing a tactic, based around a detailed notch grid system designed in Adobe Photoshop. None of this constant tweaking here, no no, just simple constructed tactics, based around an entirely new and original approach.
/ J1 S' B7 X5 W!
Having had a quick look throughout the FM community, it would appear that my grid system is unique, in as much as I can’t find another way of designing tactics like it. Feel free to tell me otherwise of course! Now, I’ve not designed this new method because of the fact that nobody else has thought of it – it simply popped into my head one day, therefore I decided to test if the theory actually worked in practice. People might scan through this article and criticise this new approach, but you do not get anywhere if you don’t try and break boundaries. I’m sure the FM grid system has its flaws, but the results have been pleasing, winning the domestic cup double in two different leagues, in two separate countries, while using two default squads.
Before I begin discussing and outlining the new approach, let me first explain how the idea came to fruition.
1 ~* S7 k4 M6 b, I6 v.
d6 e, ~, e \8 W! @* s% `* VFirst and foremost, I simply decided to break away from the norm. Designing tactics that attempt to replicate real life football is challenging yet rewarding, but also extremely time consuming if constructed properly. I’m sure many of you have increased a players mentality by five notches and reduced their creative freedom by three notches, repeating the process throughout the entire eleven outfield players, in an attempt to find that perfect fit. The final piece of the Football Manager puzzle. Constant tweaking in order to find the magical notch set up. We’ve all done it and continue to do it, myself included – I won’t ever stop constructing tactic using this method. But, I hought to myself, what if there was / is a way to build a tactic from scratch that follows an almost mathematical system? A tactic that is pretty much created and realised on paper, and stops you from tweaking Football Manager sliders. The end result being ‘final’, as it follows a methodological approach. Could this be done?
* b: I: {# O2 P7 v/ VThe Grid System
' H- X, B* ?: s6 ~/ o! IThe entire system is based around a few calculations, with the first idea being based around what the maximum football pitch dimensions can be. These dimensions are taken from a BBC web page. That page informs us that the maximum allowed dimensions for a football pitch must be 120m long and 90m wide. It can be smaller than this (90m long and 45m wide), but I want to cover all possibilities and the maximum distance allows for this. So, the maximum pitch dimensions can be 120m x 90m.8 x1 ~" O3 w- v) P! d1 m& e) i5 E
! i6 P2 `9 L7 h! E. [$ h p* R* }( E
Next I look at the Football Manager tactical interface and break down the individual player sliders. The maximum amount of notches that the game allows us to experiment with is 21, from left to right, with the starting notch being one, and the very end of the scale being 21. With these numbers in mind we can now calculate a football pitch 42 notch grid system. A 42 notch grid allows me to create a target reticle, or circle, which expands by one notch per time, spanning the entire 21 notches of mentality, creative freedom and passing length etc – effectively planning out an entire tactic by using the grid.

A players mentality indicates his vertical way of thinking, how aggressive he plays in terms of his passing, but also his positioning on the football pitch, especially when combined with forward runs set to ‘rarely’. The number of grid lines that run vertically up the pitch equate to 21 – which helps me with exact player positioning. If I play a striker within my system then he will have his mentality setting placed between, say, seventeen and twenty, depending on his role.

If I want him to keep the passing short and sweet then a simple glance at the diagram will indicate that four or five notches should do the trick, as he will be able to pass to the defence and central midfield. Alternatively, I could plan out a tactic where he is deployed as a deep lying playmaker, in which case he would need the correct passing length to pick out the advancing wingbacks at ease. Ten or eleven notches would suffice in this instance, allowing him to pass to either flank and the strikers if need be. Throughout the entire tactic building process, I only have to move the reticle over an outfield player (or the position they might end up in during a match) and choose a final passing length, in FM notches. A simple system that works surprisingly well.

: ^1 C2 r$ T+ C) n6 YBy using all of the above, we can finally begin constructing a tactic by using the grid system and where better to start that the defensive line, in order to keep things tight. During my experience, the twenty notches afforded to us within the team instructions tactical interface actually equate to moving the defensive line from my own goal area, up to and around the half way line. Your defensive line never really push on further than the half way line, when the slider is ‘maxed’ out. So we can assume that around eighteen or twenty notches on the defensive line slider push your defenders to around the half way line, where as one to five on the slider would place them in and around their own penalty area. As I want to play deep and on the counter I place the slider on seven (roughly), to keep things secure at the back and free up space in the opponents half as they push on.) \+ f5 t7 W" i5 S1 W1 l
For planning out my teams width, I use the grid, planning out which notch of the twenty I should place the marker. require that my team play nice and wide to open up space to hit teams on the counter attack when we are in possession, therefore I choose around eighteen notches for the teams width. * c" z: l6 s7 ]8 X- vAs for individual player instructions, then we follow the process outlined above, selecting mentality, creative freedom and passing length based on the outcome of the grid calculations. Looking at the final grid image above, and remembering that I want to play deep to keep things secure at the back, the grid would tell me that the goalkeeper would need a value of four for his mentality, so that he plays to the edge of his eighteen yard box. A theory / system that has produced a tactic which has enabled me to go unbeaten throughout a season, lose only three games in 72 matches and reign victorious within two countries by winning the domestic cup and league titles on both occasions, should definitely be a ‘keeper’. As mad as it sounds, looks and appears, the system seems to work!
